My work process begins with an image.
I remember my father holding a camera, and I, a young girl, standing, facing him.
Both of us are holding our breath. We freeze at the moment of photographing, frozen in time.
During the process of creation I use free association and dream states, practices taken from psychoanalysis, and walking meditation in nature. By moving through these realms, images form, are gathered up and heaped in layers. I connect materials from my personal and family archives, which include photographs, writings, and objects, with materials that I appropriate from other sources. While deeply involved in the process of making art, I also seek and receive inspiration from art, music, dance and poetry. Thus, from the slow work of deconstruction and reconstruction, a new meaning and a new image forms.
Sometimes, the two-dimensional photograph is the raw material which undergoes a transformation, becoming a three-dimensional object created from ready-mades and natural materials. Often the image takes on an expression of movement in space to become a performance or video work.
The image leads me to artistic research engaged in human existence, in issues of human nature, life, and death. I stroll through spaces between the exposed and concealed, matter and spirit, as I observe expressions of light and shadow. The process of making art facilitates opportunities for encounters, surprises, and discoveries.
